Tips to Help Make Major Life Decisions Easier

May 31, 2017

Major life decisions can be difficult to make; the outcome can influence our lives in significant ways for years to come. Unfortunately, it isn't always clear whether that influence will be positive or negative.

Whether you are considering buying a home, getting married or divorced, having or adopting a child, taking early retirement, accepting a new job offer either across town or across the country, or are facing any other kind of crossroads in your life, here are some tips to help you make a decision that you can be comfortable with.

1. Inform yourself, but set limits . Whenever you are making a big decision, it is important to have enough factual information to help shape that decision. However, there is such a thing as information overload. Some people find themselves so caught up in researching and gathering information to make a decision that they are ultimately unable to move forward.

2. Be objective. This one can be tough to practice, but some people find that big decisions are easier to make when they can emotionally take themselves out of the equation. Pretend the decision you are facing is one that a friend or family member is facing. What would you advise your loved one to do in the same situation? By approaching a choice this way, you can remove some of the emotion that comes with any big life decision.

3. Write down pros and cons . Documenting the reasons for, and the reasons against, whatever decision you're considering is a tried-and-true method of helping make difficult choices somewhat easier. Whether you do this with a pen and notebook paper or create an elaborate spreadsheet, the act of brainstorming and documenting pros and cons can help you come to the right decision faster, and with more confidence.

4. Talk it over with trusted friends . Don't be afraid to solicit advice and feedback from friends or family members, whose life experiences may help make your decision more clear. But, just as information overload can occur from researching something too deeply, asking too many friends for their opinions can also backfire. Limit the number of people you bring into the decision-making process so you don't end up with too many conflicting opinions that will just slow down your ultimate decision.

5. Reserve the right to change your mind . For most life decisions, if the choice you end up making turns out not to be what you thought it would be, you can change your mind (with the obvious exception of adding children to your family.) If you retired and find you're going stir-crazy with too much time on your hands, you can get another job. If you took a new job that isn't making you happy, you can look for another job. While it's important to be deliberate and thoughtful about life decisions, the good news is that most of them are not carved in stone.
